Loft Insulation
Without loft insulation, as much as 26% of wasted heat could be escaping through
your roof. Stopping this heat escaping can significantly reduce your heating bills
and help you to reduce your carbon footprint.
How it works
A blanket of mineral fibre wool (made from recycled glass) is placed between and
over the joists in the loft. This prevents rising heat from escaping through the roof.
Current standards recommend a depth of at least 250mm – about 10 inches – of loft
insulation to achieve best results.
It will take about two hours to lay loft insulation in the average house.
Grants
Home owners and private tenants qualify for a significant grant under the
government’s Carbon Emissions Reduction Target scheme (CERT). This can be as
much as 50% of the cost and may bring the actual price of loft insulation down
to as little as £199 (subject to survey).
Those who are over 70 or on qualifying benefits may be entitled to free home
insulation.
Local Authority and Housing Association tenants are not covered by the CERT grant
but should contact their landlords to find out what arrangements are in place.
