Why homeowners should consider switching to an Air Source Heat Pump

29th April, 2026

The landscape of UK energy security is undergoing a fundamental shift, with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband signalling a definitive move towards a clean energy future. This policy shift is aimed at insulating the UK from the inherent volatility of international fossil fuel markets. By decoupling electricity prices from gas, the government intends to ensure that homegrown, renewable power becomes the primary driver of domestic energy costs.

The announcement follows ongoing instability in the Middle East, which has highlighted the risks of ongoing reliance on global fossil fuel markets.

Outlining the strategic necessity of the move, the Energy Secretary highlighted: “The end of the gas era is here, and the era of clean energy security must come of age. We are doubling down on clean power to give our country energy security and bring down bills for good.”

Strategic policy measures: What’s changing?

The Government’s roadmap involves a structural reorganisation of the energy market to ensure that the lower cost of renewable generation is reflected in household bills. As the UK transitions through this shift, these measures include:

  • Wholesale Contracts for Difference (WCfD): The introduction of voluntary long-term, fixed-price contracts for existing low-carbon generators. This allows generators to move away from volatile wholesale prices in exchange for price certainty, covering around a third of Britain’s power supply.
  • Updated Electricity Generator levy: Immediate action to tax excess profits by raising the levy rate from 45% to 55%. This ensures revenue from gas price spikes is available to the government to support households with the cost of living.
  • Bigger grants for households: The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant – replacing fossil fuel heating systems with air source heat pumps – has increased to £9,000, specifically for properties that currently rely on heating oil or LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). For most other properties, the grant remains at a competitive £7,500 level, providing a strong incentive for the move away from gas.
  • Fast-tracking ‘plug-in’ solar: A £25 million pilot aimed at low-income households and renters. The Government’s Warm Homes Plan envisions a street by street approach to delivering tens of thousands of low cost solar panels to those most in need.

Can an air source heat pump really save you £1,400 a year?

A major question for homeowners during the ‘end of the gas era’ is the potential for long-term savings. At InstaGroup, we support the claim that transitioning to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) can save homeowners up to £1,400 per year on energy bills.

However, as technical experts, we lead with transparency: these peak savings are most commonly achieved when replacing inefficient, high-carbon systems such as old electric storage heaters or LPG and oil boilers. Because heat pumps operate at roughly 300% efficiency – compared to around 90% for a modern A-rated gas boiler – the ‘seasonal coefficient of performance’ (SCOP) allows for significant reductions in units of energy used. To reach the maximum saving potential, your property should be appropriately insulated to ensure the ASHP operates at its most efficient low-flow temperature.

Pairing an ASHP with solar PV and/or battery storage will provide even more savings, using cheaper (or even free) electricity to power the system. With battery storage, households can fill the system with electricity at its cheapest rates overnight, and use this cheap energy during the day when prices peak.

InstaGroup’s view: Expertise in transition

With over 45 years of experience in property energy performance, InstaGroup welcomes the clarity provided by these announcements. The shift towards a homegrown, electric-led energy system is the only durable way to protect the UK from external energy price fluctuations.

“This announcement gives the market the clear direction of travel it needs. However, the opportunity to future-proof UK homes for the ‘end of the gas era’ is available today. By utilising the enhanced £9,000 BUS grants and new planning rules now, homeowners can secure immediate protection from market volatility.”
